The main boon of buying part worn tyres over brand new is that they cost a fraction of the price, and if you happen to need a full set the difference in price could be quite sizable.

Are part worn tyres legal?

In short, yes. Any business that sells, or anyone that uses part worn tyres are not breaking the law. However there are strict regulations that must be adhered to, such as the tyre being in an acceptable condition to be considered road worthy.

With the condition of the tyre in mind, a thorough visual check is highly recommended. When checking the tyres condition you should check for any bulges, lumps, tears or cuts over the entirety of the tyre, not only on the outside but on the inside too, as these damages could cause or be caused by the failure of the tryes structure. During the visual check you should also look to see if any of the ply or cord is exposed, as these are parts of the tyres structure and should not be on surface level.

Apart from the visual check there is something else that you should do, that being measuring tread depth. This isn’t exclusive to part worn tyres and should be done from time to time to any tyres you use or intend to use. In the UK, the legal tread depth is 1.6mm, however part worn tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 2mm to be sold.
